Metal Detecting Perth’s Swan River
Posted by Billy on December 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Recently I have not had much time to do any metal detecting, as my partner and I have just bought a Post Office and News Agency in my rural town in the Great Southern of Western Australia, Dumbleyung. We have been very busy doing some training courses in Perth.
But last week I found the time whilst I was in Perth to head down to the Swan River for a few hours to do a bit of treasure hunting on the sandy banks of the Swan River.
I decided to find a new metal detecting spot, so I had a look through my Street Directory and I found a nice little spot where there would be a good chance to find some rings, relics and coins, an area which has been well used by people for the last 100 years or more.
I have uploaded photos of what I found that day and evening, and also before and after photos after I have cleaned my finds, such as the Silver Ring above and below.
The place when I went metal detecting, was Clarkson Reserve on the Maylands Foreshore.
When I was there, I met a curious lady who asked me what I was doing. Her name was Jenny Seaton, a media, radio and television personality who currently has her own program on Curtin FM a radio station broadcasting in the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia.
So today she is going to interview me on the radio, so thats a bit exciting and a first for me.
I told Jenny I would post photos of the items I found that night for her listeners to look at.
I found some great items, especially the Ladies 18ct Gold and Diamond Ring, which I found in about 3 foot of water. And also the Mens Silver Wave Ring which was in about the same depth.
So here is what I found on the evening I met Jenny on the Swan.

Metal Detecting Local Farm House
Posted by Billy on October 16, 2009 · Leave a Comment
A few days ago I got permission from a local farmer in my district of Dumbleyung, in Western Australia, to see if I could do a bit of coin shooting on his property around a abandoned farm house.
I was pretty happy he said yes, and yesterday I found the time to go out there with my metal detector. It was pretty hard going, as the wild oats growing around the house are pretty high, the ground was quite hard in spots, and I was a bit worried about getting biten by a wandering snake.
Over the last couple of days, the weather has been quite hot, reach the low 30° and thats what brings the snakes out around here, especially the first few hot days as summer apporaches, will bring them out of their hybernation.
There is actually another house on the same property, and that house is much older than the house I detected around, so I decided to save the best house for my next metal detecting journey.
Anyhow I found a few nice old coins around the house as per below.
See more of my metal detecting photos
Probably much more laying around the house, but it was hot and getting prickles stuck in my socks was really annoying, so I packed up and went home after around an hour metal detecting the house.

Swan River Metal Detecting Finds

I was in Perth on the weekend just gone, and decided to do some metal detecting around the Swan River area, so I decided that I would head down to the Garrett Road Bridge where there is a nice picnic area which is popular with families, swimmers and kayakers and canoers.
I thought it would be a perfect spot to find some old coins, rings and other lost treasures.
It proved to be a great metal detecting spot, and I found plenty of coins, too many lead fishing sinkers, a long lost Avon Descent Medallion and a nice silver love hearts charm bracelet and a few other things.
As I have mentioned in my previous metal detecting stories, I really like to find old dog id tags (K9 Dogs that is) and I found one of those as well.
It had a phone number on the tag, as well as the dogs name which is “Sheeba” so I decided to give the owner a call, and she was very surprised that I had found it. She told me that it fell off Sheeba, around 4 years ago, whilst on a walk along the river bank. I was happy to hear that Sheeba is still alive and well, she is now 11 years old. But starting to slow down due to old age.
So here is exactly what I found near the Swan River Metal Detecting:
- 1999 Avon Descent Competitors Medallion – Found Near Garrett Road Bridge – Bayswater – Front
- 1999 Avon Descent Competitors Medallion – Found Near Garrett Road Bridge – Bayswater – Reverse
- Extremely Corroded 1919 Australian Penny
- 1964 Australian Penny
- Sheeba’s the Dogs’ - Dog ID Tag
- Very Corroded Australian Half Penny (Date Unknown)
- Junk Brass Pendant
- 1946 Australian Shilling
- 1952 Australian Six Pence
- 1946 Australian Six Pence
- Silver Love Hearts Charm Bracelet
- Numerous other coins – $2 – $1 – 50 Cent etc
- Australian Six Pence Coin Date Unknown as I need to clean the coin. But you can see what 50 plus years of salty water immersion does to a silver coin.
Had a great couple of hours detecting there, I got there around 4pm with my girlfriend Natalie and our three little mongrel dogs, she played with them, whilst I detected, and when the mosquitos started to bite too hard, thats when I decided to pack up and head home to check out my lost treasure!
I am heading back there again in the very near future, but this time I will be taking my Minelab Underwater Metal Detector, so I can do some shallow water metal detecting.
I use a Minelab Excalibur Metal Detector when entering deeper water, it is 100% waterproof and a great detector.
The above finds I found using my Minelab E-Trac Metal Detector, it never lets me down and I always come home with something good.

Heap of Coins found Metal Detecting
Posted by Billy on July 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment
A couple days ago I decided to head back to this old australian homestead where I had previous luck before metal detecting.
But instead of metal detecting inside the remains of the house, I decided to widen my area of span of detecting to a wider area, which was outside of the ruins, around 15 metres from the entrance to the house.
The reason I did this because as I walked towards to homstead I had my metal detector turned on, and pointed downloads towards the ground. I was not swinging the coil, I just walked in a straight normal walking line with the detector by my side, and just by pure chance it sent off a coin possible coin signal. So I swung the detector back over the area where the signal went off and it was a positve reading.
So I dug the area and around 15cm under the soft soil I found my first coin.
Where I found the coin, is a farm paddock which is used to grow wheat, barley, oats and probably lupins, and the paddock is usually cropped every couple of years. This year is the off year where the paddock is given time off. So obviously the paddock is ploughed heavily or “ripped up” as we call it in Australia.
I ended up finding a heap of old coins in a very small area, so I will definetely be heading back there in the very near future.
Here are the coins I ended up finding. Feel free to click on the links to see the photos.
Australian Pennys
- 1947 Australian Penny
- 1944 Australian Penny
- 1961 Australian Penny
- 1923 Australian Penny
- 1943 Australian Penny
- 1942 Australian Penny
Australian Three Pence
- 1949 Australian Three Pence
- 1953 Australian Three Pence
- 1943 Australian Three Pence
- 1959 Australian Three Pence
Australian Six Pence
So my tip of the day … when you are walking towards an possible detecting site, such as an old house, have your detector turned on, pointed towards the ground, you don’t have to swing it, just walk, and you never know your luck, you may find something on your walk there, just like I did … a heap of coins!

Metal Detecting Beautiful Old Homestead

A couple days ago I asked permission from a local farmer if I could go out to the towns oldest Homstead called “Wheatfields” it is ??? year old and was built in ???
It is situated in a beautiful location over looking Lake Dumbleyung, Western Australia (My Hometown).
The first recorded sighting of the lake was in 1843 by explorers, Landor and Lefroy. It is the largest open lake in Western Australia’s southwest at 13km in length and 6.5km wide, covering an area of 5200 hectares.
Despite the extreme salinity recorded, the lake continues to provide a habitat for many varieties of water birds.
Lake Dumbleyung received world recognition when Donald Campbell broke the world water speed record on 31 December 1964 travelling at 276.3 miles per hour (442.08km) in his boat ‘Bluebird’. A unique granite memorial to Donald Campbell can be seen at Pussy Cat Hill, a prominent feature and vantage point to view the entire lake area.
I did not find much, I was expecting alot more coins than what I found, but the place was littered with bits and pieces of trash just under the surface of the ground, but I am definetely planning on heading back out the in the near future, and extending my metal detecting area around the outskirts of the house, where the land has been ploughed.
Anyhow I found my oldest coin to date so far, it is an English three pence coin dated 1902, not valuable, but a good find and obviously buried under the ground for well over a hundred years.
I also found a couple of Australian Six Pence coins and Australian Pennys as follows:
- 1927 Australian One Penny
- 1946 Australian Half Penny
- 1942 Australian Three Pence
- 1951 Australian Three Pence
I also found the remains on an old toy car, looks like it would date back to around the 1950’s – 1960’s by the style of the car… and as per usual found the usual old australian buttons and a few old bullet shells.
I spent around an hour detecting, it was great fun, apart from being a bit cold and rainy, but I came prepared, raincoat and a nice thermal flask of sweet hot coffee.
Really looking forward to heading back there again in the near future.

A few days ago I went coin shooting around an old town hall, and managed to find only a couple of coins, the area I searched had recently been graded so I was expecting to find a few more, but only managed two coins.
Here are some photos of the coins after I cleaned them up.
The 1956 Shilling is quite rare, according to BlueSheet.com.au worth $200 plus apparently.
