Seben Metal Detectors – Don’t Buy One!
Just writing this post, to warn people not to buy seben metal detectors which are commonly seen on ebay for sale.
I have never used one, but I know they are just a piece of junk which are made in China for around $5 and sold to people on ebay for around $200.
To prove my point, check out this Seben Metal Detector Review people complain that the English Manual does not make sense, no doubt the manual is probably in broken english!
If you have bought one, I feel sorry for you, or are bidding on a Seben Metal Detector currently … cancel your bid now!
If you want to take up metal detecting, invest in a metal detector that is going to last, perform, give you results and find you treasure!
Brands such as:
Whites Metal Detectors
Fisher Metal Detectors
Minelab Metal Detectors
Garrett Metal Detectors
Viper Metal Detectors
And many more of the best brand metal detectors
Just do some research before you consider buying a metal detector, you really don’t have to spend that much money to buy a good detector. And obviously it will depend on what type of metal detecting you are interested in, the most common is coin shooting, beach detecting, relic hunting and ring finding, and obviously gold detecting, but you need to be pretty serious to get into that side of the game, especially in Australia, where much of the surface gold has been found.

The Best and Worst Metal Detectors
Posted by Billy on April 10, 2009 · 2 Comments
Buying a Metal Detector can be a very confusing task, especially when it comes to buying a detector for your kids.
I get emails and some calls from people asking me about what Metal Detector I would recommend they buy for their kids or themselves, well my biggest piece of advice I can give you is if your kid is really serious that he or she wants to take up Metal Detecting, well don’t go to a toy shop, like Toy World or Toysrus or even an electronics store, like Dick Smiths or Tandy, they sell junk detectors. However they would be good enough to keep a kid with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd) (joke) or who a child who is very young, maybe 8 years old and under.
For $500 you can get your son or daughter a great little metal detector which they will find stuff with.
Metal Detecting is a fantastic hobbie and it can be pretty cheap to get started, it also has so many benefits, it is great exercise, it is a fun addiction, great for the mind, especially for kids with behavioural problems, it will keep your kids occupied on the holidays, especially if you go to a coastal town, your kids can go beach detecting and find plenty of coins, rings and other treasures! Trust me a Metal Detector will be alot of delight and excitement to your kids, especially when they start finding things and bringing them home or to school for show and tell.
I regularly visit ebay to see what detectors our up for sale, and am surprised when I see sellers offer cheap metal detectors and to read their promise that you are guaranteed to find gold, coins and all other treasures. These cheap metal detectors are purchased for like $20 and sold for $200 or more.
As the old saying goes.
If it sounds too good to be true, well it probably is
You can just tell because they look plastic and cheap, would make a noise as you swing the coil over the top of a dead mouse than if you swung the coil over a gold ring.!
Based on my opinion the following metal detectors I would say, be wary of and don’t waste your money on them.
The Worst Metal Detectors
Electronic Metal Coin Treasure Hunter Finder Detector
The Good Old Trusty Long Range Metal Detector - See this Long Range Detector Review
Now the following Metal Detectors are the ones you should be investing in, the prices are higher, sometimes only 2 or 3 hundred dollars higher and some are a couple of thousands dollars higher, just do your research, but you will find coins, rings, watches, jewellery and even gold if your lucky! If your unsure, join a Metal Detecting Forum and ask their for advice.
The Best Metal Detectors
I hope the above helps!
I will soon add more Good and Bad Metal Detectors for visitors to read about.

Using a Metal Detector inside your House!
Posted by Billy on January 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment
I got this email the other day from someone asking advice on using a Metal Detector inside a house as follows:
Just came across your site. My girlfriend has lost a ring in our house (we think) which was given to her by her now deceased grandmother. I don’t think it is worth much but obviously has great sentimental value.
I am a bit sceptical that it could be found in our house, which is quite an old house and I am assuming filled with copper pipes/iron nails etc… Do you think it would be worth trying to find it?
Also if possible I would try and do it secretly so if found it would be a surprise.
My reply to the person was, it would be impossible to find the ring inside their hours with a Metal Detector, obviously there would be way too much electrical interference, let alone all of the metal inside the house, especially if it is a Steel framed home. There a many many factors to consider, copper piples, roofing insulation, steel roofs, electrical wires, all of the metal under the house, pipes, frames, house supports etc.
Basically the only way you could find it is to do a good thorough search of the house, it will likely turn up, and could have easily rolled under a carpet, fridge, amongst clothes and so much more.
Just a word of advice, don’t use a metal detector inside your house, it wont work, unless you live in a mudbrick house,

Metal Detecting Equipment I Use to find your Lost Jewellery and Relics
Posted by Billy on January 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment
I use a variety of Metal Detecting Equipment to retrieve old relics, coins, lost jewellery, lost rings at the beach, and much more.
Obviously I use Metal Detectors to find the lost treasure, rings, old coins etc, but thats the easy part, after I get the signal of a potential buried item which may be your lost ring, watch, bracelet, earring or something else, thats when I will use some other tools which will make the recovery easy.
I will show you some pics of exactly what I use when hunting for your lost items or when I am just metal detecting for my own use.
Currently I have two top of the range Minelab Metal Detectors
As follows:
Metal Detectors I use
My first one is the Minelab E-Trac Metal Detector from the very first day I bought this, I tested it out straight away and had fantastic success with finding over $250 in loose coins on a Western Australian Beach, around 11 Gold and Silver Rings, plenty of fishing sinkers and as usual plent of bottle caps.
It is an awsome machine. It can be used on both land and sea … but please take note that it is not Waterproof, however, there is no problems if you detect in water of around a foot or two depth, but please make sure if you buy one, you always wash the coil prior to finishing and storing away…. don’t get the digital display wet, you can purchase metal detector covers for the display. But even with the cover, it is not 100% water resistant. If you buy one, please ask the dealer about this. And how to use it without getting the display unit wet.
E-Trac is Minelab’s most technologically advanced detector, incorporating unique Full Band Spectrum (FBS) Technology. Its sleek, sturdy design, innovative control panel, intuitive menus, clear LCD, robust lightweight coil and comprehensive targeting options set E-Trac apart from any other detector available today.
Minelab has taken a further ground breaking step by incorporating a USB interface, which will allow you to download and upload E-Trac settings, User Modes and Discrimination Patterns using your own Personal Computer (PC).
E-Trac will locate valuable metal objects in a variety of mineralised ground conditions such as extremely salty soils, sea water, wet beach sand and highly magnetic ground conditions. By using the E-Trac you can become one of the many successful detectorists who combine their passion for the outdoors with the excitement of discovering valuable coins, relics, gold and jewellery on a regular basis.
E-TRAC TechnologyE-Trac delivers Full Band Spectrum (FBS) with Simultaneous Frequencies ranging from 1.5kHz – 100kHz through its powerful microprocessor. The frequency range means that the signal received from the detector coil is analysed from a wide range of responses. This allows E-Trac’s advanced signal processing to rate detected objects according to their ferrous and conductivity (FE-CO) characteristics and analyse more target information so that the target identification (ID) is more accurate.
Minelab’s Smartfind™ is a unique two-dimensional scale of discrimination. Smartfind™ graphically represents both the ferrous and conductivity properties on the same display. This combined with E-Trac’s target Discrimination ability eliminates signals from undesired targets and accepts signals from desired targets. E-Trac’s technology means:
- Greater detecting depth
- High sensitivity over a wide range of targets
- Less interference from electromagnetic sources
- More accurate identification of target characteristics
E-TRAC XchangeE-Trac Xchange allows you to download and upload detector settings and Discrimination Patterns via USB to your Personal Computer. This advanced feature is designed to allow you to quickly configure the E-Trac to particular detecting environments and preferred targets.
You can always share your experiences and settings with other detectorists. The installation CD and Xchange User Guide supplied with your E-Trac ensure you can get started straight away.
You can build a resource library charting your success with your E-Trac. Download and store your valuable Settings, User Modes and Patterns for your favourite sites and upload them as required. There’s no limit to the number you can store on your PC so make the most of your E-Trac and never worry about losing your successful settings again!
Features
- E-Trac Xchange USB functionality – create, download and upload your E-Trac Settings and Discrimination Patterns for your favourite sites; save to your PC or XChange them with others by email.

Mineland Excalibur II Metal Detctor
This machine is great and is 100% Waterproof, which means you can snorkel or dive for lost treasure, rings, coins, jewellery and much more, the very first time I used this metal detector, I found a beautiful 9 Diamond Mens Diamond Ring, in a couple feet of water at a beach, it’s worth alot of money, so I was very happy about this. I found that ring in around a foot of water.
The New and Improved Excalibur II
Minelab’s unique BBS 17 Frequency and Ground Rejecting Technology makes the Excalibur II the ideal machine. This amphibious detector can move from land, beach, wet sand conditions to underwater depths up to 200ft (66m) seamlessly.
Never again get false signals from detecting in salt water, enjoy the simple, yet effective discrimination, be surprised at the sensitivity and depth that you pull targets from.
The Excalibur II is the ideal coin and treasure detector.
Its New features and improved specification include:
- New High Visibility (Hi-Vis) fluorescent bodywork
- New Slimline Coil (8″ or 10″ option) for improved balance
- New NiMH Rechargeable Battery Pack
- New Hi-Vis Skid Plate
- New Side-Mount Shaft for shallow and surf-wading (available as an optional accessory)
I also use Koss headphones on My E-Trac Metal Detector, they are pretty good, but if it is windy, it is sometimes hard to hear Signals, however I would recommend them, usually if you but a Metal Detector, they will give you free headphones, if not, just ask if they can throw in a set, especially if you are spending alot of money of your first detector.
Sifts, Beach and Sand Scoops
When water detecting, such as metal detecting calm rivers, estaurys, lakes, dams and ponds I use a homemade Sifter which is attached to old tyre tube, this is very easy to use and make. To use it, basically to have it attached to your body via a strong length of rope, when you detect a strong signal under the water with your detector, you use a Metal Detecting Beach and Sand Scoop to pick up the sand or mud in which the coin, ring may be buried in, it acts as a sift, and when the mud or sand drains out, it should reveal your find, which will hopefully be something of value. I will describe below more about the types of Scoops I use.

G’day from Western Australia

Hi there,
My name is Billy and I am a full time Metal Detectorist, whether it be on Dry Land, Beach, or Under Water.
I have decided to start this website so I can catalogue all of my finds on the internet for myself, friends, and visitors to see what I find on my adventures through out parts of Western Australia on my Treasure Hunting trips.
I am not exactly a professional Treasure Hunter, I am just an amateur detectorist, and in my opinion the defination of Treasure is basically anything worth money, something shiny, old, it can be a 1 cent coin or an old silver six pence coin, a beautiful diamond encrusted ring, gold, silver trinkets, ear rings, number plates, anything really that I can admire.
At the moment I use two types of Metal Detectors.
The first one is the Minelab E-Trac
E-Trac is Minelab’s most technologically advanced detector, incorporating unique Full Band Spectrum (FBS) Technology. Its sleek, sturdy design, innovative control panel, intuitive menus, clear LCD, robust lightweight coil and comprehensive targeting options set E-Trac apart from any other detector available today. More info here
The second is a Minelab Excallibur ll
Minelab’s unique BBS 17 Frequency and Ground Rejecting Technology makes the Excalibur II the ideal machine. This amphibious detector can move from land, beach, wet sand conditions to underwater depths up to 200ft (66m) seamlessly. More Info here
I have a lot of luck with both detectors, finding Gold and Silver Rings and plenty of old Coins on nearly all occasions I have used them.
Here are some coins I found from just one days beach detecting
Well, thats me and this is what this website is all about, enjoy your stay and please keep visiting, and you’ll see what Lost treasure I find!
Cheers
Billy
