Metal Detecting Honesty

A few days ago I wrote how I received a phonecall from Katie who lost her Silver St Christophers Pendant, Silver Necklaces And a Silver Ring at Scarborough Beach near Perth Western Australia.

I did a 3 to 4 hour search of the area where she had lost the ring, but could not find it. So that night I asked on my blog if anyone who maybe had previously metal detected the area may have already found it to contact me.

Well yesterday I got a phone call from a friend Dick who told me his friend may just have found Katies lost jewellery which is fantastic news.

He informed me his friend found a Silver St Christophers Pendant, Silver Necklaces And a Silver Ring on Scarborough Beach the day Katie lost it.

I told Katie of this great news, and now she has to wait a couple of weeks to be reunited with her lost jewellery as the metal detector guy is away working up North, so that is great news for Katie and for my blog that someone out there has the decency to return Katies treasured jewellery.

Who ever it is who found, a big thank you for me! Your honesty is beyond words.

Lost Scarborough Beach – Silver St Christophers Pendant, Silver Necklaces And Silver Ring

Lost Scarborough Beach – Silver Saint Chirstophers Pendant, Silver Necklaces And Silver Ring

If you are a metal detectorist and maybe you have found a Silver St Christophers Pendant, Silver Necklaces And Silver Ring?

I did a search of Scarbourough Beach last night to help Katie find these items.

The St Pendant and Necklace is of huge sentimental value to herself, it was recently given to her by her father, who just underwent major spinal surgery.

Katie was obviously very upset, she is new to Perth, from New Zealand. She told me the other day she accidently broke a mirror, and told me she is not superstitious, but now she is having second thoughts.

Katie was surfing down at Scarbourough Beach on Monday 8th December and removed her silver chains, pendant and silver ring and placed them on her towel whilst surfing, when she returned, she forgot about them, lifted her towel and dried herself and then went home.

An hour or so later she realised what she had done, and went back to the beach to do a frantic search … no luck.

She contact me, and last night I spent around 4 hours looking for the lost jewellery, unfortunately I had no luck.

So we are hoping that maybe someone may have found it, an honest person who could please maybe return these to Katie who is quite devastated.

I told Katie maybe a Perth Metal Detectorist may have found them, as I no other metal detecting guys frequent the beach on a daily basis.

So please if you have found it, please get in touch with me

Metal Detecting an old Western Australian Farm House

Old Western Australian Farmhouse

Old Western Australian Farmhouse

On the weekend I got permission from a local farmer to do some metal detecting around his old family homestead, which is no longer lived in, it is situated around 20 kilometres from my local town.

So I headed out there in my car excited to be on another metal detecting trip, confident of finding some lost momentos of another era.

On arrival it did not take long for me to find my first old coin, around 2 minutes, so that is always a good boost for confidence when metal detecting, finding something more or less straight away.

I spent a couple hours there, and found a few interesting things to add to my metal detecting collection.

This is what I found

  1. Thomas Bolton & Sons – Copper I.D. Wire Plate

The firm of Thomas Bolton & Sons grew out of a business producing metal buckles into one of the world’s leading wire, especially electrical wire, manufacturers. This article traces the development of the company from its early years in the late 18th century to its takeover by the cable companies in 1961. Important stages in the company’s growth were marked by the introduction of cold drawing and continuous wire drawing to meet the demand for long lengths of high-conductivity, high-tensile-strength copper wire for the telegraph and telephone industries

  6. Victorian Era Necklace Pendant – Made from Lead – Would have previously been painted gold

Thats about all I found at that place, apart from the usual junk, such as pulltabs, aluminum cigarette foil and nails and heaps of lead to add to my lead collection.

There would likely be much more around the place, but as usual with alot of these old houses, they have lost bits of their tin roofs and the ground is heavily littered with tin, metal and much more.

It was a great day and it is always great to bring home a few lost treasures!

Beautiful Gold Art Deco Pendant Found

Gold Art Deco Pendant - Beach find

Gold Art Deco Pendant - Beach find

The other day when I was metal detecting at one of the beaches in Perth Western Australia, I was swinging the coil just along to bottom of the beach were the white wash of water was washing onto the beach line, I got a nice signal. And thought it may have been a gold ring. Anyhow on this particular day I did not remember to bring my beach scoop, so I frantically got onto my needs and started digging into the soft wet sand.

I was very happy when I finally found the lost treasure, it was the beautiful gold art deco style pendant.

I believe this pendant may have been in the water for many years, possibly 50 or more.

I gave it to my girlfriend for christmas, she loves it!

I really love metal detecting, its the best hobbie in the world!

Gold Locket - Stamped 9ct Lined Rodd

Finally after Detecting at a old Ghost Town in Western Australia, I have found my first Gold piece of Jewellery at an old townsite, near were I live in Dumbleyung Western Australia.

George Rodd in 1919, G. & E. Rodd made such popular items as watch alberts, bracelets, rings, cuff links, tie pins, brooches, lockets, crosses and from the early 1930s also presentation medals and enamelled badges. Their flatware included sets of tea and coffee spoons, souvenir and trophy spoons. By the late 1930s, G. & E. Rodd was the leading firm of manufacturing jewellers in Australia. In 1948 they became a public company, Rodd (Australia) Ltd. The firm’s successors continued the business until 1985. (See: K. Cavill, ‘The jewellery and silverware of G & E. Rodd, and its successors’, Australiana, 1987 (1), pp15-18; also K. Cavill, G. Cocks, J.Grace, ‘Australian jewellers, gold and silversmiths, makers and marks’, 1992, pp 78-79, 199-201.)

I spent around 2 hours hunting around, found a few more old pennys, and belt buckles, and a old Vintage Motorbike Number plate, unfortunately it was damaged.

Silver Love Locket

I found this Silver Love Locket at Scarborough Beach a few weeks ago, it did have a couple photos inside, but the water had deteriorated the photos. Its a nice little locket, but not worth using again as it had been underwater for too long and the pin has broken.
