Metal Detecting Honesty

A few days ago I wrote how I received a phonecall from Katie who lost her Silver St Christophers Pendant, Silver Necklaces And a Silver Ring at Scarborough Beach near Perth Western Australia.

I did a 3 to 4 hour search of the area where she had lost the ring, but could not find it. So that night I asked on my blog if anyone who maybe had previously metal detected the area may have already found it to contact me.

Well yesterday I got a phone call from a friend Dick who told me his friend may just have found Katies lost jewellery which is fantastic news.

He informed me his friend found a Silver St Christophers Pendant, Silver Necklaces And a Silver Ring on Scarborough Beach the day Katie lost it.

I told Katie of this great news, and now she has to wait a couple of weeks to be reunited with her lost jewellery as the metal detector guy is away working up North, so that is great news for Katie and for my blog that someone out there has the decency to return Katies treasured jewellery.

Who ever it is who found, a big thank you for me! Your honesty is beyond words.

Lost Scarborough Beach – Silver Saint Chirstophers Pendant, Silver Necklaces And Silver Ring

If you are a metal detectorist and maybe you have found a Silver St Christophers Pendant, Silver Necklaces And Silver Ring?

I did a search of Scarbourough Beach last night to help Katie find these items.

The St Pendant and Necklace is of huge sentimental value to herself, it was recently given to her by her father, who just underwent major spinal surgery.

Katie was obviously very upset, she is new to Perth, from New Zealand. She told me the other day she accidently broke a mirror, and told me she is not superstitious, but now she is having second thoughts.

Katie was surfing down at Scarbourough Beach on Monday 8th December and removed her silver chains, pendant and silver ring and placed them on her towel whilst surfing, when she returned, she forgot about them, lifted her towel and dried herself and then went home.

An hour or so later she realised what she had done, and went back to the beach to do a frantic search … no luck.

She contact me, and last night I spent around 4 hours looking for the lost jewellery, unfortunately I had no luck.

So we are hoping that maybe someone may have found it, an honest person who could please maybe return these to Katie who is quite devastated.

I told Katie maybe a Perth Metal Detectorist may have found them, as I no other metal detecting guys frequent the beach on a daily basis.

So please if you have found it, please get in touch with me

Metal Detecting Perth’s Swan River

18 CT Ladies Gold and Diamond Ring - Swan River Metal Detecting Find

Recently I have not had much time to do any metal detecting, as my partner and I have just bought a Post Office and News Agency in my rural town in the Great Southern of Western Australia, Dumbleyung. We have been very busy doing some training courses in Perth.

But last week I found the time whilst I was in Perth to head down to the Swan River for a few hours to do a bit of treasure hunting on the sandy banks of the Swan River.

Mens Silver Ring as I found it

I decided to find a new metal detecting spot, so I had a look through my Street Directory and I found a nice little spot where there would be a good chance to find some rings, relics  and coins, an area which has been well used by people for the last 100 years or more.

I have uploaded photos of what I found that day and evening, and also before and after photos after I have cleaned my finds, such as the Silver Ring above and below.

The place when I went metal detecting, was Clarkson Reserve on the Maylands Foreshore.

When I was there, I met a curious lady who asked me what I was doing. Her name was Jenny Seaton, a media, radio and television personality who currently has her own program on Curtin FM a radio station broadcasting in the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia.

So today she is going to interview me on the radio, so thats a bit exciting and a first for me.

I told Jenny I would post photos of the items I found that night for her listeners to look at.

I found some great items, especially the Ladies 18ct Gold and Diamond Ring, which I found in about 3 foot of water. And also the Mens Silver Wave Ring which was in about the same depth.

So here is what I found on the evening I met Jenny on the Swan.

Beautiful Silver Ring Found

Beautifully Designed Silver Ring I Found Metal Detecting
Beautifully Designed Silver Ring I Found Metal Detecting

When I was metal detecting at the swan river last week, there was a sandy playgound for kids right on the riverbank, the type of playgrounds, with swings, slides, monkey bars and all the other stuff kids like to play on. I thought I’d give the metal detector a bit of a swing there on my way back to the car, because I know that kids playgrounds are a great place to metal detect, because the kids lose money from the pockets, when they are swinging upside down on the monkey bars, their mums lose their rings as they are playing with their kids, jewellery falls off as the kids play rough with their mums and dads… and so much more.

So it proved a lucky day, not only did I find plenty of coins down the river bank, but I found myself this beautiful silver ring, with some tiny stones and one big stone. They are not real diamonds, but I wished they were, because the big stone is huge. I feel that it may be a wedding ring, because the design is so beautiful and intricate, I may be wrong, but nethertheless, it is a beautiful ring, and the photos don’t do it justice. So I’d say a kids Mum lost it as they were catching their small child at the bottom of a slide, because thats where I found the ring … at the bottom of a slide.

Amanda’s Lost Rings Found!

Amanda's Lost Silver Black Opal Ring - Found at Hillarys Beach

Amanda's Lost Silver Black Opal Ring - Found at Hillarys Beach

Around two weeks ago I received a frantic phonecall from a girl by the name of Amanda who told me she lost two rings at Hillarys Beach just North of Perth. She asked me if there was any chance I could help her.

I said that by chance I was on my way up to Perth that day for a few days and I would be able to do a search for her.

I know Hillarys Beach pretty well as I had been there previously many times in search for another persons lost wedding ring, but the search for that ring has been fruitless … but I never give up and I always look for it when visiting Perth.

Amanda was pretty upset, because one of the rings was a gift to her Mother from her father, so it carried an enormous amount of sentimental value to her.

She described the place where she thought that she had lost it, and I knew roughly where to search.

around two days later I found the time to head down to Hillarys Beach, and within a few minutes I had found the first ring, a nice silver ring, with what looks to be a black opal or another precious stone inside it. So I was really happy to have found the first ring. And now the search was on for the next ring.

A few days before I went to Hillarys a big storm front came through and the water was washing directly over the spot where Amanda had lost her rings, so I was thinking maybe it had moved away from the spot, or another Metal Detectorist had found it.

She actually lost both her rings next to a wire fence, so I knew that the wire would be interferring with my metal detector, so I decided to get the shovel out and start digging all the top sand away from the fence, and then wave my detecting over the beach sand with I threw in an area behind me, and low and behold, that worked, I waved the detector over, got a nice 12.09 reading with my Minelab E-trac and found it! So I was really happy.

Amanda works away on the mines, she is a geologist, so a couple days later when I got back home, I decided to ring Amanda and tell her the good news.

She was estatic, screaming out with joy and relief! I felt great also, knowing that I am going to reunite Amanda with her lost rings. She has learnt a lesson, don’t wear your rings to the beach, and a few other things that I told her and she told me!

I am meeting up with Amanda this week, to reunite her with her rings, she told me the reward and that made my day, very generous, so thank you Amanda for calling me!

Nice Silver Pearl Ring Found

Once again I found another nice Silver Ring whilst metal detecting on a Beach in Perth.

Looks like it had been in the water for some time due to the discoloration of the ring, I did not find it in the water, but just on the wet sand where the waves were washing onto the shore. I did not spend much time on the beach, it only took me a few minutes to find it, but if I had more time, I am pretty sure I would have found more rings and jewellery, because the water was so calm, and there were good sand washouts where the tide had been, and thats the spots I have had alot of luck find rings whilst metal detecting on beaches.

Anyhow, it’s always great to find a nice ring, I also found around $10 in loose coins.

Can’t wait to hit the beaches again, probably this week, if all works out well!

I was in Perth the other day and decided to hit the beach for a few hours of metal detecting. The night before a big storm front came through so I knew I would have a good chance of finding some jewellery and coins.

I decided to go to Sorrento Beach, because I had been there before doing a search for a guys lost wedding ring, but unfortunately could not find it, so I go back to the beach, hoping I still may find it by some miraculous chance.

Anyhow, I found plenty of coins and a few pieces of jewellery including a small silver toe ring.

Metal Detecting Withdrawal Symptoms Fixed! Silver Ring Found!

Rusty Ring? No - It is Silver and Silver does not Rust! Before after Photos Coming Soon!

Rusty Ring? No - It is Silver and Silver does not Rust! Before after Photos Coming Soon!

Over the last week I have not had any time to go out Metal Detecting, due to the Easter Holidays and spending time with my family, so yesterday it was time for me to go out bush to go and find some stuff before I went crazy as I was seriously having withdrawal symptoms!

Winter is not too far away and the days are getting shorter, so I left around 4pm with a couple of hours to spare until darkness, I decided that I would go out to my towns local Lake, Lake Dumbleyung and to some hunting for possible lost rings!

Anyhow I arrived there, covered myself in some insect repellant, because the flies are really bad out there and off I went.

A friend of mine Tony from Sydney Metal Detector Services gave me a few metal detecting tips for when searching in salt water and very mineralized conditions. I have a Minelab Etrac Metal Detector and I set the detector into the settings he gave me and off I went.

The section of the Lake I went to is the old Water Ski Club, at the moment the Lake is near on dry, but very muddy around 50 metres from the shoreline.   I just basically detected around the ski boat ramp area and where people would swim when the Lake is full of water. I found the usual lot of pull tabs, and then a old silver coin, I think it is an Australian Six Pence, so obviously that coin had been sitting in the water for over 40 years.

Then I got my self I nice tone, and dug around, the soil was like brick hard clay, and after around 10 minutes of digging around, I found myself a ring!

I have attached the photos of the Ring, I think it is a Silver Ring, as you can see, the ring is very tarnished, which is to be expected with a Silver Ring laying in Salty conditions for a long period of time. And the same goes with the Silver Six Pence I found.

I also went for a bit of a walk on the salty flats, I was amazed to find a beautiful old glass coca cola bottle just laying half buried on the Lake, so I presume that bottle had been there for at least 25 to 30 years or more, it is obviously a bit weather worn, but other wise in excellent condition, no cracks no chips.

I love finding Old Bottles, that is another hobbie of mine. See my Old Bottle Collection

The Old Australian Glass Coca Cola Bottle I found on the Lake bed

The Old Australian Glass Coca Cola Bottle I found on the Lake bed

As I mentioned above and you can see in the photos I have attached, both the Silver Ring and the Silver Six Pence are very tarnished, so much so, that you would not know they are silver.

So I have decided to do another Coin Cleaning and Silver Ring Cleaning experiment.

Currently I have both the coin and the ring, soaking in an ice cream container, which I covered the bottom with some foil, placed the ring and the coin on top of the foil, then put around 4 big table spoons of Bicarbonate Soda on top of the ring and the coin. Then I covered the ring and the coin in about 2 litres of boiling hot water.

I will let that soak for 24 hours, then I am going to clean them up in my Lortone Tumbler using some very fine tumbling grit and watch the tumbling very closely so I do not do any damage to the ring and especially the coin, which could be of value.

So I will keep you up to date and post some before and after cleaning photos of the Silver Coin and Silver Ring.

Anyhow, It was great to get out for a couple of hours yesterday, there is nothing better that going metal detecting, it always clears the mind and makes you feel great.

Toe Rings and Ring Tips

Swirly Silver Toe Ring - Beach Find

Swirly Silver Toe Ring - Beach Find

I have a nice collection of Toe rings which I have found when metal detecting on the beach. Alot of people who swim just don’t realise when they enter the water that there fingers and toes will shrink in diamater, and especially when you are splashing around, kicking your feet, swimming overarm this action will cause your rings to losen even more. Just a word of advice!

But even though most people realise this, they just think that it will never happen to them, but it will.

The other day I was a Sorrento beach snorkling with my Excalibur II Underwater detector and a lady came up to me and ask if I had found her ring by chance. She lost it a few weeks back swimming.

Anyhow when she asked me I notice that she still had another few nice diamond rings on her fingerand I said to her:

Well you lost your ring swimming, and here you are again swimming and still have your other rings on your fingers

She replied:

Oh well I’ll just take the risk

Pretty damn stupid if you ask me!

Anyhow here are a cople of toe rings I recently found…. I really like the “swirly” ring.

A while back, whilst Beach Metal Detecting with my Minelab E-Trac Detector, I found a great little spot on the beach where the sand had been washed away, and new that it would be a perfect spot to find some lost treasure!

I actually found alot of treasure, namely gold and silver rings and lots of coins.

Anyhow here is the silver ring I found, a beautiful girls matching hearts silver ring, it was likely given to her by her boyfriend and she lost it swimming.
